Virgin Atlantic MasterCard and Flying Club Guide

Virgin has released two new MasterCards to replace the their previous Virgin Atlantic AMEX cards, and we have written this article so you are fully aware of the changes.
Please note if you have a Virgin Atlantic Amex you will need to reapply for the Mastercard to continue collecting points.
First up there are 2 types of cards the free card and fee-card (which costs £160) each card has different earning potentials.

Sign-up Bonuses…

Free Card 5000 miles sign up bonus after your first purchase.
Annual Fee Card (£160) 15,000 sign up bonus points after your first purchase.

Earning…

Free Card – 0.75 Miles for every £1 Spent on your card.
Annual Fee Card – 1.5 Miles for every £1 Spent on your card.

Free Card…

When you spend over £20,000 in a 12-month period you’ll earn your first reward, you can use your reward on a companion ticket or a premium economy upgrade (you will receive this reward as soon as you hit your spend limit) and your rewards are valid for 24 months.

As you have 24 months to redeem your rewards you will be able to ‘stack’ them! So if you qualify a Companion ticket and then spend an additional £20,000 you will have 2 companion tickets available for use in your account (so you can bring 2 friends on your next flight instead of one!)
* Companion Flights are still subject to flight taxes.

If you’re a solo traveller your reward can also be used on an upgrade from economy to premium economy. (when you pay for your flight with miles) subject to availability.

Premium Card…

When you spend over £10,000 in a 12-month period you’ll earn your first reward, you can use your reward on a companion ticket or a premium economy upgrade (you will receive this reward as soon as you hit your spend limit) rewards are valid for 24 months.

As you have 24 months to redeem your rewards you will be able to ‘stack’ them! So if you qualify a Companion ticket and then spend an additional £10,000 you will have 2 companion tickets available for use in your account (so you can bring 2 friends on your next flight instead of one!) *Again, you just need to pay flight taxes.

If you’re a solo traveller your reward can also be used on an upgrade from economy to premium (when you pay for your flight with miles) subject to availability.

Virgin Flying Club…

If you don’t have a Virgin Flying Club account you can sign-up for free by going to https://www.virginatlantic.com/profile/enrolllanding.action once signed up you will be given a flying club membership number which you will need to link to your Virgin MasterCard.

*You can join Virgin Flying Club regardless of owning a Virgin Atlantic Credit Card or not! it’s 100% free to join and all members get 7% Off Virgin Holiday Bookings (which can save you £100’s!!)

Ways to Earn Miles…

There’s a few ways to earn Virgin miles with the first being ‘Shops Away’ which works the same way as a ‘Cashback’ Website (but instead of cash you earn miles) the earning potential is quite impressive, for example at Hotels.com you can earn a whopping 9 Miles per £1 Spend!

The average cost of a Hotel Booking in the UK is £150 which will earn you 1,350 Virgin Miles! (Not to forget that Hotels.com has it’s own reward system where you earn a free night for every 10 bookings!) making ‘Shops Away’ very beneficial for travellers!

In total there’s over 1000 retailers on ‘Shops Away’ which you can earn Virgin Miles from (including retail giants such as Debenhams, ASOS and Boots!) just head to https://shop.virgin-atlantic.com/en/ to sign-up and view the full list of stores.

Tesco Clubcard…

If you own a Tesco Clubcard you can convert your quarterly reward vouchers into Virgin Airmiles at the Clubcard Boost website https://secure.tesco.com/clubcard/boost/

Exchange rates…

You can exchange every £2.50 of Tesco Clubcard Vouchers to 625 Virgin Airmiles (a great way to increase your flying club balance without paying for miles).

We hope this guide has helped you! Happy Holidays!
